The Ian Mikardo High School is the end of the line for boys who have been permanently excluded from mainstream education. When they arrive here, they are aggressive, disaffected and at risk of ending up in custody. In this two-part series, this unique secondary school in Tower Hamlets, east London, opens its doors to allow viewers an intimate look at the troubling but deeply moving stories of five very different boys with severe and complex behavioural problems.

James is 11 and has just joined Year 7 after being excluded from his previous school for violent behaviour. At first, he refuses to speak to staff, but it's not long before his intimidating attitude surfaces and he directs his anger towards classmate Perrie. After five years at Ian Mikardo, Calvin is forced to think about life beyond the school and emotions run high as he prepares for his 10-hour GCSE art exam.|
